OTTAWAFollowing Wednesday’s adoption of New Democrat MP Bruce Hyer’s Climate Change Accountability Act by the House of Commons, the Senate heard first reading of the private member’s bill by the sponsor of the legislation, Liberal Senator Grant Mitchell.

“We urgently need federal action on a climate change framework for Canada” said Senator Grant Mitchell. “Not only is climate change a defining ecological issue, it is increasingly an economic one. I commend Mr. Hyer for his hard work on this bill, and I look forward to the collaboration of my colleagues in the Senate to move it forward.”

“I could not be more pleased that Senator Mitchell has agreed to steer this landmark climate legislation through the Senate.” said Hyer. “His experience, extensive knowledge of the file and longstanding dedication to action on climate change makes him the ideal Senate sponsor. Canadians are demanding we correct an acute leadership void on climate change, and I look forward to working with the Senator to build the cross-party support needed to see this vital legislation passed into law without delay.”

Bill C-311 sets science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In late May, the bill will begin debate at second reading in the Senate.
